Muraho! Amakuru?
Welcome to the musings of a Canadian-Chinese twenty-something living in Rwanda for three months (May-July 2014)! I am overjoyed to share my thoughts and experiences with you, as much as I could with limited internet access. My purpose for going to Rwanda:
PRACTICALLY- this is part of a service-learning, developmental theory/social justice credit-course offered at the University of Toronto (SMC362) with a three month academic seminar component and three month abroad component, partnered with the NGO Intercordia Canada (http://intercordiacanada.org/our-placements/rwanda/rawanda-2/)
ACADEMICALLY/PROFESSIONALLY- my reasons for joining this very special program was first planted in my head in my first-year of undergrad. Long story short, pursuing a major in Psychology and minors in Sociology and Art history along with keen interests in Global health, social justice and a desire to become a social worker set me on a decision-making path that led me to Intercordia!
PERSONALLY- what it boiled down to for me was a passion for people, their stories and living; including the struggles, the highs and lows, the triumphs and desires. That would be the generalized answer, but why Rwanda? I must honestly say, the decision was based on many, many factors none of which can be said weighed more than another except for my curiosity for the truth and heart of what reconciliation of a peoples, of a nation could mean in this world; a unique history to grapple and ponder about.
So, take a walk with me through ups and downs; the intersecting of cultures and my reflections on that in the Land of a Thousand Hills and beyond!
Turangara! (See you later!)
